Half Caff vs. Decaf: What's the Difference?

Half caff blends regular coffee with decaf; decaf removes most of the caffeine. Compare how each is made, the caffeine, the taste and which cup fits your day.

By domus Admin ·

Quick answer: half caff is regular coffee blended with decaf, so it keeps part of the caffeine of a regular cup. Decaf is coffee that has had most of its caffeine removed, so it keeps only a small amount. Choose half caff if you still want a gentle lift; choose decaf if you want the coffee ritual with as little caffeine as practical.

The difference at a glance

How each one is made

Half caff

Half caff starts with two coffees: a regular, fully caffeinated coffee and a decaf. They're blended so every scoop has less caffeine than regular coffee alone. Our Half Caff Coffee is a smooth medium roast made with regular coffee and water-process decaf. Learn more in what is half caff coffee?

Decaf

Decaf starts as regular green (unroasted) coffee. Before roasting, most of the caffeine is removed. Common methods include:

  • Water processes, such as the Swiss Water Process, which use water, time, temperature and filtration rather than added chemical solvents.
  • The CO₂ process, which uses pressurized carbon dioxide to draw out caffeine.
  • Solvent processes, which use ethyl acetate or methylene chloride to remove caffeine, followed by steaming and roasting.

Our Peru Swiss Water Decaf uses the Swiss Water Process. Our Decaf Espresso Beans are a dark-roast, water-process decaf. Read what is Swiss Water decaf? for how it works.

Caffeine: what to expect

Neither half caff nor decaf is caffeine-free. As general reference points, the FDA lists 113–247 mg for 12 fl oz of regular brewed coffee and typically 2–15 mg for 8 fl oz of decaf. Note the different serving sizes. Half caff falls between the two, but where it lands depends on the blend, how much coffee you use and how big your mug is. We don't publish milligram figures for our individual coffees because we haven't lab-tested them. See how much caffeine is in half caff coffee? for more detail.

Taste: is there a difference?

Caffeine itself has a mildly bitter taste, but roast level, origin and freshness shape the cup far more. A well-made half caff tastes like a familiar coffee. A good decaf should taste like coffee too. Our Peru decaf, for example, has caramel, smooth and citrus tasting notes.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose half caff if you want some lift, are cutting back gradually, or want a second cup without a second full-caffeine cup.
  • Choose decaf if you're caffeine-sensitive, want coffee in the evening, or simply love the ritual more than the buzz.
  • Keep both if your day has more than one coffee moment. Many people drink regular in the morning, half caff in the early afternoon and decaf after that.

Brewing half caff and decaf

Brew both exactly as you'd brew regular coffee, using the same equipment and recipe. Choose Standard for drip or pour-over, Coarse for French press, Espresso for espresso machines, or Whole Bean to grind at home. Our coffee grind size guide has recipes for each.
